Meena lives in one of these houses, close to the school. She loves to learn but is sometimes behind as she can only attend school when not needed at home (often she has to help work with her family or cook and clean) The Daangi people have to take work whenever they can get it so the children don't always have a steady routine.

In the local area the main crops people grow are tomatoes, corn, coriander, aubergine and papaya. This is only possible if the environment is suitable at the time of planting and throughout the process of the farming. Other produce can be grown depending on weather conditions.

There are only a couple of clean water pumps in the community. Women and Girls have to walk up a few miles (often more than once a day) to collect clean water for their families.

Although hard work is the centre of the Daangi's sustainability, so is happiness. What they have is something that we often miss out on in western communities. They are so focused on helping one another and sharing their problems and accomplishments that they are surrounded by laughter and love as apposed to stress and anger when things get hard.

Even if they have a good season, their is still no guarantee that they will sell their produce once they get to town. Because they don't have constant supplies they don't have a specific pitch or shop in town. They can not rely on regulars, only passers by and whether or not the market is good on that particular day.

Laalu goes to school when he isn't needed at home. He comes in more than a lot of the other children there but like the other children, because he is needed as soon as school finishes and at the weekends, he has no time to study in between so it still takes him a long time to learn . After a holiday (they have weeks off around the year for different hindu celebrations) he will struggle to remember anything he learnt in the previous term.

The Daangi community seem quite willing to move forward and adapt to change. When they can, more and more are putting their children in school for longer, as they know they can not rely simply on the way they currently farm and live due to the unpredictable climate and understand how important education can be. Which ever choices the community make, they are happy and content with what they have and always seem full of joy.
